The Keep Australia Beautiful ACT Sustainable Cities Awards deadline for entries has been extended – you now have until Friday 3rd May 2013 to apply. These awards recognise the efforts made by residents, community based organisations, businesses and local government agencies in achieving sustainability in the ACT. This year marks nine years of the awards being held in the ACT, with the territory finalist going on to enter the Australian Sustainable Cities awards towards the end of the year.
These awards have grown over the years to encompass sustainability activities as diverse as waste reduction and recovery, sustainable buildings, conserving water, and a Young Legends category. There is also a new Wildcard category, which allows more people to apply for any initiatives that don’t match the existing criteria but believe that they address environmentally sustainable issues.
National Chief Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful Peter McLean has urged all ACT residents including community groups, schools, businesses and all levels of government to enter. “The awards recognise and celebrate everyday actions taken by Canberra’s communities to improve, maintain and sustain their local environments.”
Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and Patron of the ACT Sustainable Cities Awards says these awards “are an opportunity for people to be recognised for their efforts in environmentally sustainable practices.”
Last year Merici College was recognised for their kitchen garden program that encouraged learning sustainability practices, new skills, and innovative thinking for students at the school, as well as in other schools in the territory. Previous winners have been recognised for environmental education programs, sustainable travel, sustainable building, solar energy and recovery of food waste, as well as a long list of other activities to make the ACT more sustainable.
The Chairman of the ACT Sustainable Cities Judging Committee Rolfe Hartley said “The ACT Sustainable Cities Awards showcase and celebrate the achievements of citizens and organisations at all levels in making sustainability the norm for Canberra. I am always excited to see the innovation and dedication that each year’s entries demonstrate.”
The Australian Capital Territory is already leading the way for all Australians, which include sustainable practices like banning all plastic bags in retailers in 2011, and offering the public rebates and assistance to save energy and water, reduce waste and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Canberra is 100 years old, and these awards celebrate these sustainability achievements and encourage an even more sustainable century to come.
The Keep Australia Beautiful ACT Sustainable Cities Awards are an initiative of Keep Australia Beautiful National, sponsored by the Do The Right Thing program of the Australian Food and Grocery Council’s Packaging Stewardship Forum.
