Burleigh Beach in Queensland won Young Legends at the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Clean Beaches Awards 2015.
The Overall Australian Clean Beaches win went to Guilderton Western Australia, with Burleigh Beach coming in at a close second, also achieving a Runner Up award.
A firm favourite with both locals and visitors, the Burleigh coastal strip beat some of the most beautiful beaches in the state, in a decision which the judges said was made because of the high and innovative level of community involvement in taking care of the beach.
Mayor Tom Tate firmly endorsed the judges’ view that the win was the result of the strong and enduring partnerships between Burleigh residents and City of Gold Coast.
“There’s no doubt that beautiful Burleigh is Queensland’s best beach because of the huge efforts that local volunteers and community groups make all year round, supporting the City’s work in maintaining and caring for Australia’s best beaches,” he said.
“Whether it’s one person picking up some litter while walking on the beach, the local BeachCare group caring for the dunes, or the City’s beach crews getting our beaches in shape after a storm, we’re in this together, and that community spirit has shone through to the judges.”
