The West Australian town of Hedland has won the Environmental Innovation and Protection Award at the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Tidy Towns Awards 2013. The town was also highly commended for Community Action and Partnerships. The winners were announced at the national awards ceremony hosted by the 2012 national winner, Caloundra, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland on Friday 17 May. The overall 2013 Tidy Towns title went to Victor Harbor, South Australia.

The Australian Tidy Towns Program recognises the hard work undertaken by rural and regional community groups, schools, businesses, individuals and councils, and showcases innovative ideas and initiatives that improve sustainability in our regional areas.

The Hedland community understands how it must respect and preserve its natural heritage. The range of innovative and engaging initiatives underway in the town provides evidence of the ground-breaking work being done in this area.

One of the most prominent programs has been the ongoing turtle monitoring at the two local flatback turtle rookeries on Hedland’s foreshore. Currently in its ninth year, the program is coordinated by the Care for Hedland Environmental Association and entirely comprises youth who dedicate hundreds of hours each year towards the monitoring.

“Hedland’s Tidy Towns Committee and extensive network of business, industry and community groups play an important role in preserving and enhancing the local environment through a range of projects and developed alliances for a sustainable future,” National Tidy Towns judge Dick Olesinski said.

Peter McLean, National Chief Executive Officer for Keep Australia Beautiful said, “Community members continue to initiate creative and exciting programs each year, and the community projects that have emerged in previous years gain a momentum of their own and sustain themselves through the passion and dedication of the town’s residents.”

The awards event included a tour of Caloundra showcasing some of the coastal town’s excellent projects which contributed to their win last year. A speed networking section after lunch allowed representatives the chance to share information and network with like minded professionals from around Australia.

Chris Jeffreys, National Program Manager from the Packaging Stewardship Forum “congratulates Hedland and their community who worked collaboratively to achieve the highly commended Community Action and Partnerships award. Tidy Towns awards can only be achieved where there is a good level of community participation and social capital. The grass roots programs offered by Keep Australia Beautiful provides opportunities for councils and their communities to showcase their achievements towards sustainability.

Packaging Stewardship Forum programs focus on resource recovery, away from home recycling and anti littering which are complimented by Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Program. All councils and their communities who make the effort to participate in the awards program across Australia should be encouraged and congratulated.”

2013 marks 45 years of the Tidy Towns awards in Australia, with Keep Australia Beautiful receiving 1180 initiatives nationally, from over 300 entrants across councils, shires, community groups, schools and individuals.

The Australian Tidy Towns Awards are sponsored by the Do the Right Thing Program of the Australian Food and Grocery Council’s Packaging Stewardship Forum.
