The Australian Sustainable Communities Awards program was a UNAA finalist in Organisational Leadership in 2016.
For almost 50 years, Keep Australia Beautiful has been working with communities across the country to improve the sustainability achievements of grassroots rural, regional, metropolitan and coastal communities across Australia.
From humble beginnings in 1968, the Tidy Towns name has always been synonymous with community pride, cohesion and above all community action.
Recognising the value of celebrating the hard work of communities across Australia, Tidy Towns became a national program in 1991. The Australian Clean Beaches and Australian Sustainable Cities Awards were later introduced (in 2002/3 and 2007 respectively) to recognise and reward efforts in sustainability in coastal and metropolitan communities – collectively they are known as the Sustainable Communities Awards.
Since our beginnings, we have seen almost 420 towns, cities and beaches go on to represent their state or territory with their tremendous amount of involvement from communities, schools, councils, volunteers and governments across the country, and we have seen 48 Australian title holders.
The Sustainable Communities Awards encourage, motivate and celebrate the outstanding achievements in litter prevention and environmental sustainability from leading councils and community groups. Beyond a healthy dose of competition, the Australian Sustainable Communities competition also brings together community leaders, environmental champions, young legends and waste warriors from every corner of our great country to share experiences, learn from and inspire each other – this is the true Sustainable Communities spirit.
