Australian’s are passionate about their beaches and understand that they are pristine environments to be kept tidy and litter free for the enjoyment of all beach users and for the safety of our beautiful marine wildlife.

Across the country there are a range of projects that people can participate in. What is sometimes missing is the opportunity to share examples of best practice and to communicate the progress that is being made.

The Australian Clean Beaches Project is a suite of social media formats and a communications program that connects people active in keeping our beaches clean and communicates their successes to all Australians.

The Australian Clean Beaches Project is a collaboration that includes the following organisations and their state, territory and individual members. It seeks to add value to existing communications and refer additional traffic to existing programs.

Keep Australia Beautiful

  • The National Litter Index tells us what litter is where and in what volume and includes beaches as one of eight site types
  • Keep Australia Beautiful Week in 2011 focussed on marine and inland waterway litter
  • The Australian Sustainable Communities Awards recognise local environmental initiatives. All beach communities can enter either the Tidy Towns Awards or the Sustainable Cities Awards

  • Clean Marine, an education and awareness campaign working with the recreational fishing and boating community. Active in SA and WA

Surf Life Saving Australia
