Burleigh Beach in Queensland have gone home today with the Young Legends award, won at the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Clean Beaches Awards 2015.

The Overall Australian Clean Beaches win went to Guilderton Western Australia, with Burleigh Beach coming in at a close second, also achieving a Runner Up award.

The event was held in Darwin, hosted by Parliament House and welcomed by The Honourable Bess Price MLA; with last year’s winner Nhulunbuy handing over the iconic title.

Burleigh Beach were awarded a 4 star accreditation through the Keep Queensland Beautiful Clean Beaches program in May 2014. It was this award that put them forward to compete for the National title for 2015.

Australian Clean Beaches judge Averil Bones said “Youth 4 Beaches have adopted Burleigh Heads beach and headland through Keep Queensland Beautiful Adopt-a-spot. This contributes to their vision of making a positive impact on decreasing the amount of litter at Gold Coast beaches and fighting for a litter free future”

Youth 4 Beaches is a non-profit organisation that encourages young people to step up and keep the Gold Coast’s beaches clean and green. Their aim is to get local youth to start leading healthy, sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyles within the community, making it fun at the same time.

“A partnership with Sort Recycling sees this youth group collecting E-waste from the local community for recycling, upcycling and re-purposing,” Ms Bones said.

Peter McLean, National Chief Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful said “it’s pleasing to see another year of high calibre National finalists from every corner of our amazing country.”

“Each finalist exhibited significant outcomes in a range of sustainability projects and activities. The National Clean Beaches program allows each of them to learn even more, so that they can continue to thrive as a community and achieve success on their sustainability journeys and in keeping Australia’s beaches and waterways clean.”

The awards event included the finalists meeting and networking at Mindil Markets on the Thursday evening, with presentations about their projects on the Friday morning at the Trailer Boat Club. This was followed by a tour of Darwin Foreshore.

The reception was held at Government House, hosted by His Honour the Honourable John Hardy OAM, Administrator of the Northern Territory and Mrs Marie Hardy.

The Australian Clean Beaches Awards are sponsored by the Department for the Environment.

Through the Clean Beaches Awards Program, Keep Australia Beautiful share expert knowledge and experience to empower those who care about our beaches and waterways to actively work towards a cleaner, more sustainable marine environment.
