Students at Bexley Public School have been celebrated in the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader for their breathtaking new mural, Our Living Country, a vibrant tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the surrounding natural environment. Created as part of the Paint Australia Beautiful Schools Mural Competition, the artwork was crowned the New South Wales winner, making Bexley one of six national finalists for the People’s Choice Award. The whole-school project brought together students from Kindergarten to Year 6 through the school’s High Performance and Gifted Education art program.
Supported by Haymes Paint, the mural reflects the deep connection between people, nature, and Country through three colourful panels symbolising the past, present, and future. Principal Scott McCardell described the artwork as a lasting legacy for the school, while Assistant Principal Kathie Cvijetic said it embodies community pride and a shared responsibility to protect the environment.
The school’s achievement has also been recognised on Channel 7 News, featured in The Bright Side segment – highlighting the creativity and teamwork behind the mural.
