Australia is facing a landfill crisis, with more than 22 million tonnes of waste sent to landfill in the past year alone. In a recent AAP article, Keep Australia Beautiful’s historic Do the Right Thing campaign was highlighted as a turning point in shifting public behaviour.
It’s affirming to see the campaign recognised, but more importantly, it shows how small actions and simple campaigns, led by the people of Australia, can shift habits at scale.
The message is also a timely reminder that we can’t stop here. As we look to the future, the challenge is the same: how do we inspire everyday Australians to play their part in tackling waste? How do we go beyond preventing litter to reducing the amount of waste going to landfill?
We’ve done it before. And with the right collective action, we can do it again.
